When time is short, say it clearly first.

The tighter the schedule, the sooner expectations need to line up. What matters most, and what will be hard to make, should be discussed with the client at the very start.

Sharing progress and problems as they happen isn't making excuses for the result. It gives both sides time to make choices. Communication is part of what keeps the design good.
